Week 4 football wrapup
Posted 9/17/2008 1:00:00 PM

Call it a week of offense – there were a number of blowouts and a total of 20 teams scored 55 or more points in Week 4… Here are my thoughts and comments on selected games from around the state.

The attention grabbers:

Jasper 18, Heritage Hills 0
What??? This is just the 2nd regular season loss in the last 10 years for the Patriots.  Since 1994 Heritage Hills is 122-4 in the regular season.  Congratulations to Jasper.

Lawrence Central 28, Pike 21
The run continues for LC, while it’s a losing streak for Pike.  The Bears are one of the biggest surprises in the state at 4-0, while the Red Devils lose their second straight for a 2-2 mark.

Week 3 football wrapup
Posted 9/11/2008 11:50:00 AM
Here is a look at notable scores from the third week of Indiana high school football:

Carmel 33, Center Grove 32
A bounce of the ball – literally – makes a big difference in this major showdown.  A reverse of last year’s meeting as this time it’s Carmel going for – and converting – a two-point conversion in the final minutes to make the difference.

Castle 24, Evansville Central 23
A matchup of previously unbeatens in Evansville.

Cincinnati St. Xavier (Ohio) 17, Cathedral 3
The Irish may be 1-2, but losses to nationally ranked Carmel and St. X will have them tested for anything for the rest of the season.  Do not be shocked if they win out.

Week 2 Football wrapup
Posted 9/1/2008 9:50:00 PM

Watching scores from Friday night and Saturday, here are some of the notable results of the second week on the Indiana high school gridiron:

Friday (alphabetically by winner)

Ben Davis 35, Penn 27
 - A closer score than I would have predicted, but the result is the same.  Ben Davis goes to 2-0 and Penn is 0-2 for the first time since 1981 (at least that's the stat I've heard).  Things will get interesting for the Giants the next two weeks, going to Lucas Oil Stadium to face North Central, then the showdown at rival Warren Central.

Brebeuf 47, Guerin Catholic 21
 - On the surface it may appear that a 3A handles a 1A team - exactly what you would expect in most cases.  However, don't overlook the improvement Brebeuf has shown in their 14 games under head coach Ryan Gallogly (11-3 since his arrival, the school had just two winnin...

Review of Week 1 Football
Posted 8/27/2008 5:11:00 PM
Here are a rundown of the games I've taken note of from Week 1:

Carmel 28, Cathedral 21
 - The talk of the football community, it was a great atmosphere for 5A #1 vs. 4A #1 and was of course on ESPN.  The Greyhounds come from behind thanks to QB Morgan Newton, but no thanks to heat cramps.

Warren Central 42, Merrillville 0
 - The Warriors began the John Hart era with a big win, scoring an 80-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and running off to a 36-0 halftime lead.  The then-ranked #2 Pirates showed they have some improvements to make, while the Warriors prove they should be one of the top contenders in 5A.

Center Grove 41, Dayton Carroll (Ohio) 0
 - The Trojans outgained the supposed #2 team in the second-largest class in Ohio 411-64 yards offensively.  CG spent a lot of time ranked #1 last season, when they were supposedly a year away.  With an opening win like ...
