Salvation Army In Need of Food Donations

The Indianapolis chapter of The Salvation Army is one of many charitable organizations in need of donations to re-stock food pantries and shelters.

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard kicked off his "Pack the Pantry" initiative Friday morning.

Local Salvation Army Development Director Jeff Stanger says the need has been higher and more consistent this year compared to years past and their food pantries are running at critically low supplies.

Stanger says it is actually pretty typical for donations to be down during a presidential election year, but the struggling economy has added to the severity of the need. The Salvation Army and the other food pantry organizations in the city are applauding the mayor's recognition of the immediate need instead of waiting for the traditional holiday drives.

Donations of canned goods, dry boxed goods, and money can be taken directly to pantry locations.
