In the pre-dawn hours Tuesday, nearly 50 law enforcement officers, from local, state, and federal agencies, descended upon residences in five counties to serve Clay County arrest warrants for drug violations.
The arrest warrants were for various charges ranging from possession of marijuana to dealing in methamphetamine. In all 40 defendants were arrested or being sought.
The Clay County Sheriff’s Department, lead agency in the nearly 2 ½ year long covert drug investigation, initiated their campaign in the spring of 2006 to rid the county of illegal drug activity.
To support the Clay County Sheriff’s Department in the large number of arrests, the Indiana State Police Department detailed 26 officers from command, uniform, detective and K-9 units to assist.
“We are very pleased in being able to reduce the number of drug offenders in our community. This effort would not have been possible without the many tips from the public”, commented Clay County Sheriff Mike Heaton.
