Proceed cautiously...that's the way Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jill Long Thompson thinks the state legislature should deal with the local government streamlining recommendations of the Shepard-Kernan Commission.
Long Thompson says she comes from a rural county and local government works well there. She says lawmakers don't need to approach it from a "one size, fits all" mindset.
Long Thompson says the commission put a lot of it's recommendations together with little input from local elected leaders.
Among the recommendations by the commission: doing away with county commissioners and replacing them with one elected county executive, and forcing smaller school systems with less than 2,000 students to merge.
