Two things stood out about last night's results show. The voting viewers got serious. And,Aaron Carter showed what it meant to dance for his DWTS life.
It also proved that the real story was not in who was automatically voted on, but it was about the two men who danced their hearts out to stay on for next week.
The viewers really got it right when they put NFL Dallas Cowboys star Michael Irvin and Iron chef Mark Dacascos in the bottom three. Both were in the bottom at the end of Monday night's scoring. And, of the remaining celebrities, they showed the least promise to be able to move on.
Michael did receive his highest individual scoring the night before. He worked hard for it. It was just that it was too late, not flashy enough, and still left him behind the advancement of the others from the previous weeks.
You couldn't help but like him. His attitude and big charming smile lit up the stage. The viewers saw him this week as a great guy but, truly, the least proficient of the contestants. He became the first of the two taken off...and the viewer vote did it.
Mark, on the other hand, had shown so much promise. But this week Lady Luck gave him no break when it came to his Monday night individual and group dances. His partner Lacey Schwimmer had come down with the flu. He had to practice with two different fill-in partners on short notice and perform in the competition with Anna Trebunskya. He had some miscues and probably tried to over-compensate in his part. That just put him out of sync.
But you have got to hand it to him when he was in the dance-off against Aaron Carter ( Aaron's being there is another story.). Lacey was back. He was in hi comfort zone with her. Mark pulled out all the stops and gave the performance of his life, It was confident, energetic, clean, sharp and top-notch the judges concurred. Mark made a statement to the judges and his opponent Aaron.
Aaron didn't take it lightly either. He was out to put his jive out there in winning form. After all, Aaron and his pro Karina Smirnoff had been at the top of the judges leader board at the end of the Monday night show. Frankly, he shouldn't have even been in this position. But, you know how those viewers get...it's a popularity contest sometimes instead of a dance contest with them.
The judges had a hard decision. Len Goodman remarked that three week's ago he had been giving Aaron 6s in scoring . Then he gave him a 10 this week. It's about consistency and improvement and keeping it there. That is what they saw in Aaron and Karina's performance.
The judges even told him they couldn't believe he was in the bottom three. The jive was well-suited to his energy and youth. He was definitely the "Comeback Kid." And, when it came to the judges go-ahead-nod. Aaron got the "comeback vote."
Great dancing and great music, as interspersed in the show were performances by Rod Stewart, Colbie Callat and the up-coming band of dance professionals Mark Ballas and Derek Hough. DWTS was definitely a nice showcase spot for all.
