Andrea Merlyn returns to the Fringe for the 5th
year. Every year of the
IndyFringe, Andrea Merlyn has been there wowing audiences with an hour long
magic and comedy show. Who is
Andrea Merlyn? Andrea Merlyn is a
magician. Andrea Merlyn is a
magician dressed in drag. Behind
the make-up is Indianapolis native Taylor Martin. Martin used his history with the Fringe to create a show
filled with some of the best and worst magic from previous years. His ability to poke fun at himself
really makes the show approachable and enjoyable. The show is officially rated PG-13 because of a few dirty
jokes and innuendos so this might not be for the littlest of kids.
This was my first encounter with Andrea Merlyn and this is a
magic show that is unlike any other.
Helping Andrea throughout the show are a few of Martin’s characters,
along with the “Indianapolis Leprechaun” Michael McCrakin and Dave Alusik. McCrakin provides some hardy laughs and Alusik impresses with his slight of hand card tricks, yet the heart and soul
of the show is Andrea Merlyn herself.
There is something endearing about Martin as Andrea
Merlyn. Martin truly wants to
entertain the audience and his appreciation and dedication for the art of magic
shines throughout the show. Beyond
the magic, Martin really holds his audience in high regard and goes out of his
way to make the show enjoyable and accessible. At the end of the hour, the house lights come up and
standing at the exit is Martin, shaking the hands of every audience member and
thanking them for coming to his show.
It seems to be that chivalry isn’t dead at all, it simply happens to
wear a dress.
Martin is sitting out for the sixth year of IndyFringe to
spend more time with his stage manager and wife, Deborah. Experience something unique and catch
him at Theatre on the Square while you can.
