Show Review: Welcome to Blanksville

I must forewarn you, my review is going to be fairly useless when it comes to this show.  INDYPROV’s Welcome to Blanksville: An Improvised Tribute to Choose Your Own Adventure is exactly that; a choose your own adventure improvisational comedy show.  As such, every show is different; so different in fact that even the cast changes for every show.  With this in mind, I found this show to be delightfully fun.

Prior to entering the downstairs theater, make sure to check out the suggestion table.  I missed this completely as I entered.  It is here where the audience gets the first change to be a part of the show.  In bins marked with general categories, audience members put in slips of paper with suggestions that might show up during the show.  If your mind draws a blank and you just can’t think of a funny place or famous person to suggest, don’t worry; there is still plenty of opportunity for you to participate.

The show is lead by a narrator who reads from a binder much like those choose your own adventure books of the title.  Throughout the show, the narrator pauses the action and asks the audience to decide where the story should go next.  Applause dictates the direction so cheer loudly for your favorite of the options.

This show is rated PG-13 with topics that may not be suitable for younger children.  If you can find a babysitter for the night, I suggest giving this show a try.  The ‘choose you own adventure’ structure really lends itself to improv comedy.  If you think you’ll miss all those improv games that make up the average improv show, don’t worry; they make their way into the act every now and then.  Check out Welcome to Blanksville at the Phoenix Theater and sit back, relax, and let your applause guide the way.
