(RTV6) Seventy-two years after two torpedoes fired from a Japanese submarine sunk cruiser USS Indianapolis, the ship’s wreckage was found resting on the seafloor on Saturday – more than 18,000 feet below the Pacific Ocean’s surface.
The ship was found Saturday by a search team led by Microsoft co-founder and billionaire philanthropist Paul Allen. The team was assisted by historians from the Naval history and Heritage Command in Washington.
John Cadwallader joins the show. His father was on the USS Indianapolis when it sunk. John reflects on what the finding of this ship means to him and his family now that they have closure.
"When I became aware of it, my first reaction was surprise, but the next feeling was a pain in my stomach as another dose of reality came to me."
