Cold Beer 4 Hoosiers

Cold beer should be sold at all stores in Indiana, all the time.

Being new to Indiana, you quickly learn what stories and what issues move Hoosiers. In my nearly three weeks in Indianapolis, the biggest story I've heard about is not politics or violence or bike paths; it's beer.

Never mind that package alcohol sales aren't allowed on Sundays (we'll deal with that another time.) It's a law in Indiana cold beer can not be purchased from a convenience store or a grocery store. You can not - after a long day at work or for a surprise get together on a Saturday afternoon or a make-shift Sunday block party to watch the Colts throttle some pathetic challenger - go to the local store and get a cold 6-pack.

You can buy the beer...but only at room temperature.

Is this England? Did we not kick their asses 238 years ago to ensure our inalienable right to Life, Liberty, the Pursuit of Happiness and cold beer?

Opponents of allowing cold beer sales say, "...expanding the law will make it easier for minors to buy alcohol, create more opportunities for drunken driving and put the smaller package liquor stores out of business."

Yes. 19 year-olds who want to get drunk with their friends have such fussy palates that they will only drink cold beer. No one reading this has a memory of sipping peach schnapps while their parents were out of the house. Sure.

According to their press release, "The Indiana Petroleum Marketers and Convenience Store Association (IPCA) and its members’ filed a complaint in U.S. District Court  in May 2013 that claims Indiana’s alcohol law violates the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution by restricting convenience, grocery and pharmacy stores to selling beer only at room temperature."

Good for the IPCA, and good for Indiana!

The proponents of this draconian law also believe in married couples sleeping in separate beds. But they are more than old-fashioned. They are the self-indulgent elitists who believe they know best for you and me. They are the ones who believe that laws like this protect me from, well, myself.

I don't want to be protected. I just want a cold beer. And I plan on getting one. Join the cause - #ColdBeer4Hoosiers
