Indy Must Demand That Rep. Andre Carson Resign Today

For the past few weeks, my shows have been alone in Indianapolis in calling for the repudiation and the resignation of its congressman, Democratic Rep. Andre Carson, for his horrific and shameful judgement. I have long discussed his willingness to participate on a panel at a 2014 Muslim American Society conference with Mazen Mokhtar, who was known to the FBI as a Taliban fundraiser (he did not attend the panel when the information was made public.) But recently it was learned that Rep. Carson willingly attended a dinner in 2013 with anti-Semite and bigot Louis Farrakhan, along with terrorism financier and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.
As I have written about Farrakhan:
So we are clear, let me say again that Louis Farrakhan is an anti-Semite and a bigot. He hates white people. He hates gay people. He hates Jews. He's a horrific human being whose supporters should be looked at with utter contempt. Those who value his thoughts or ideas are on the most tattered fringes of civil society; and decent people - regardless of their political differences - should work together aggressively to make sure people like him have no positions of power or influence.
Yet, inexplicably, the majority of the mainstream press - and Indianapolis press - have remained silent on this. No articles, and no mentions of Rep. Carson's awful, disqualifying judgement. Kudos to CNN's Jake Tapper, whom I have at times disagreed with on my shows, for taking Farrakhan's anti-Semitism and bigotry to task. While the rest of his network may be silent, Tapper has been loud and clear and effective on his network and on social media.
The issue of association with Farrakhan grew when Women's March co-founder Tamika Mallory and Carmen Perez went out of their way to show support for him. On Mallory, Forward's Elad Nehorai stated, "Tamika Mallory has not just gone to see a man oozing of such hatred speak. She has publicly endorsed him....She has refused to back down for her attendance. She has refused to denounce his words. She has composed her own anti-Semitic dog-whistling comment. And she has thanked others for supporting her attendance."
Mallory's defense of Farrakhan, and his views, reached a fevered pitch when she tweeted:
If your leader does not have the same enemies as Jesus, they may not be THE leader! Study the Bible and u will find the similarities. Ostracizing, ridicule and rejection is a painful part of the process...but faith is the substance of things!— Tamika D. Mallory (@TamikaDMallory) March 1, 2018
Yes, you're reading that right. The co-founder of the Women's March - the same Women's March that is organizing the March For Our Lives - is comparing anti-Semite and bigot Louis Farrakhan to Jesus Christ.
Mallory wrote of Farrakhan in 2017, "Thank God this man is still alive and doing well." Perez commented on Farrakhan that, "There are no perfect leaders."
Now, more and more people are noticing that Farrakhan defenders and acolytes and dinner guests need to be repudiated for their actions. For elected leaders, however, repudiation is not enough; they need to resign or be fired. The Republican Jewish Coalition has called for the resignation of multiple Democratic members of Congress who have or continue to associate with Farrakhan. Rep. Andre Carson is one of those mentioned.
The statement, from RJC Executive Director Matt Brooks:
Seven long-serving Democrats have close ties with Louis Farrakhan. Each of them should resign.
They include former Nation of Islam employee, Congressman Keith Ellison, who is Deputy Chair of the DNC. Ellison has tried to excuse his 2013 meeting with Farrakhan, while ignoring his more recent meeting with the NOI leader in Farrakhan’s hotel room, in 2015. At least six other Democrats are known to have embraced Farrakhan. These members of Congress - Maxine Waters, Barbara Lee, Danny Davis, Andre Carson, Gregory Meeks, and Al Green - have all, while in office, sat down with Farrakhan for personal meetings.
There can be no question about how abhorrent it is for these Democrats to be connected to Louis Farrakhan. Farrakhan is first and foremost a preacher of hate. He preaches about Jewish “control” over the government and media and has claimed to have “pulled a cover off of that Satanic Jew,” saying “your time is up, your world is through.” And those were just the comments from last week.
Anti-Semitism is unacceptable. Farrakhan is the moral equivalent of a leader of the KKK. If it was discovered that members of Congress had met with the leader of the KKK, they would need to resign. In this case, for meeting with, and embracing, Louis Farrakhan, nothing short of resignation is acceptable from these seven Democrats.
I could not agree more, but I should not be alone. Rabbis across Indianapolis should agree. Faith leaders across Indianapolis should agree. Business leaders across Indianapolis, whether they are Jewish or not, should agree. The voters of Indianapolis should agree: Rep. Andre Carson can not represent Indy.
If Indy truly loves all, then we must make sure that our elected leaders do the same. Rep. Andre Carson has proven that he does not love all. It is time for the local Indianapolis media to join me in the honest conversation about Rep. Carson.
We may not always agree politically, and we may not always agree on what's best for our amazing city (and Indianapolis is an amazing city!) But we have to agree that silence on Rep. Carson's decisions and associations is unacceptable. There can be no more silence. Andre Carson has to go, and we - together - have to say so.
