A renewed cooperation between the private and public sectors in northwest Indiana is expected to lead to a boost in economic development in the region. The Environmental Protection Agency recently notified Lake and Porter counties that they had met the standards of the 1997 Clean Air Act. Northwest Indiana Forum President Mark Massel cites recent efforts by companies such as ArcelorMittal, U.S. Stell, BP and NIPSCO. He says the General Assembly's authorization of a public-private partnership to build the Illiana Expressway will also assist in making sure the region remains in compliance with federal standards.
Indiana continues to be the home for innovation in the technology industry as evidence by a record number of nominations for the 2010 TechPoint Mira Awards. TechPoint President and Chief Executive Officer Jim Jay says there are now more than 1,500 technology companies operating in Indiana, all benefiting from Indiana's superior tech work force, educational resources and lower infrastructure costs.
The Ball State University Board of Trustees has approved more than $15 million in budget reductions that will occur over the next 15 months. Approximately $7.8 million will be saved through changes in employee benefits, with the rest coming from improved energy conservation, better print management practices and other efficiencies. The university also increased some student fees. The actions are the result of a reduction in state funding.
The chief executive officer and principal of Indianapolis-based architectural firm Schmidt Associates will be honored next week by the Indiana Interior Design Coalition. Wayne Schmidt will be recognized as an Indiana Legend in the field of architecture at the second annual "Legends IN Design" awards.
Lafayette-based Subaru of Indiana Automotive Inc. (SIA) will mark its 6th anniversary of achieving zero landfill status by hosting its 2nd Annual SIA Environmental Stewardship Awards. Ball State University will honor a famous alumnus and creator of the popular Garfield comic strips next month. An Extraordinary Evening with Jim Davis will be held April 17 in Muncie. Guests will have a chance to meet Davis and learn about his company, Paws Inc. of Albany, which supports the licensing of Garfield products.

The Indiana State Department of Health has landed a $5.3 million federal grant to promote nutrition and physical activity in Bartholomew and Vanderburgh counties. The Healthy Communities Initiative of Bartholomew County and the Welborn Baptist Foundation in Vanderburgh County will share the grant.
At least 200 jobs are expected to be eliminated at Anderson Community Schools as the district copes with budget deficits and upcoming consolidation. Our partners at the Herald Bulletin report Superintendent Felix Chow says notices will be mailed to an estimated 125 teachers, although some of them will not be laid off.
RAIL Magazine will feature the Indiana High Speed Rail Association and the group's Founding Officer and Vice President of Business Development Dennis Hodges.
