He tried several times to make the Indianapolis 500, succeeding in 1974.

But Bill Simpson’s racing legacy can hardly be summed up in his one Indianapolis 500 start.

Simpson is one of the pioneers of the racing safety equipment business, first with his original Simpson Performance Products corporation, and subsequently, Impact Racing.

Simpson now has no ties to either company, and instead, has become a leading advocate in developing safer helmets for football players from pee wee to the NFL.
