Fishers Will Try Again to Become A City in 2009

It's been tried before without success, but the backers say they're confident that the Town of Fishers will become a City in 2009.

The CityYes committee, which was formed a month ago, says rapid growth demands that Fishers have a nine-member City Council, with six members elected by districts. The existing seven-member Town Council is elected entirely "at large." CityYes Chairman Greg Purvis says the switch would increase accountability.

Fishers voters rejected city government in 1998. But in a little more than a decade, the town's population has nearly doubled to more than 66,000 residents.

Only 1600 of them have to sign the petition to force a referendum as early as May. Purvis says he has more than 800 signatures already.
