The state's expanded "One Indiana" initiative is expected to save local governments $8.5 million in road salt this winter.
Indiana Department of Administration Comissioner Mark Everson says a total of 160 local units of government participated in a joint purchasing agreement with the state on a road salt contract, which became effective July 1. Those cities, towns, counties and schools are working directly with the state's vendors to determine delivery dates.
The "One Indiana" plan has also included purchase agreements between local governments and the state involving computers and even office supplies. Severson says future agreements could involve school buses.
