Empowerment Tour 2009, a summer-long coast-to-coast tour of career coaches, is making a stop in Indianapolis on Monday.
In partnership with e-learners.com, the tour has a team of career coaches, guest speakers and scholarships for online courses.
Michael Cushman with the Empowerment Tour says the economy is forcing many people to reevaluate their careers and educational requirements. He says being a generalist isn't as attractive as it was when the economy was booming.
Listen to Michael Cushman with Amber Stearns on WIBC's First Day:
Most people go about education and job seeking without understanding what they really want from it, says Cushman. He cautions job seekers who go to job fairs to apply only for jobs that you really want.
Cushman says an employer is looking for a person who is the best fit and has some training or enthusiasm about the job. He also maintains the job search engine web sites aren't as effective, either.
Cushman estimates only five to 10 percent of the jobs available are listed on the web, and then you are competing with potentially thousands of candidates. Often, an employer will consult an expert in the field for which the company has an opening to get a recommendation for a candidate.
Cushman recommends the best thing to do is to know what you do really well that other people admire and know what you're passionate about. That evaluation will guide your choices of classes to sharpen your skills or the types of jobs that suit you best.
The Empowerment Tour is at Circle Center Mall in downtown Indianapolis Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Click here for more information.
