Three Muncie men are headed to federal prison for burning a cross in the backyard of an African-American family.

Listen:

The FBI arrested 41-year-old Richard Lashure, his son 19-year-old Richard Logue and 19-year-old Aaron Latham for the crime. The three were sentenced Thursday to a year or more in prison.

U.S. Attorney Tim Morrison says Indiana cities are among the top five for hate crimes among cities of comparable size.

Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez came to Indianapolis to warn offenders that the U.S. Justice Department's top priority is defending civil rights.

Last week, President Obama signed new hate crimes legislation that Perez says will help Indiana law enforcement share resources to go after offenders.
