Three people, including two children, are in the hospital after a serious crash on I-65 Friday afternoon that shut down traffic for over four hours.
Sgt. Anthony Emery of the Indiana State Police says 72-year-old Charles Walker of Knox, Indiana was driving an RV with a horse trailer attached, going southbound on I-65 near the Keystone Avenue exit. When traffic came to a stop, Walker mistakenly hit the accelerator and ran into the vehicle of 36-year-old Erin McCormick of Illinois. Walker continued to apply pressure to the accelerator and ran McCormick into four additional vehicles before coming to a stop.
McCormick was taken to Wishard Hospital and her two children, a 4-year-old girl and a 2-year-old boy were taken to Riley Hospital, all with life-threatening injuries. No one else was hurt in the crash.
Walker was issued three tickets for driving a vehicle in the third lane of an interstate while towing a trailer in violation of posted signs, driving a vehicle-trailer combination in violation of the maximum length, and for speeding when required to reduce speed. He was also issued a written warning for an expired trailer registration plate.
