Nearly 5,000 soldiers and civilians are involved in emergency response training exercises this week at the Muscatatuck Urban Training Center in southern Indiana.
The exercises are designed to give troops experience in dealing with homeland emergencies using the skills they've learned in the military.
About 150 civilians are portraying survivors of a nuclear bomb explosion in Indianapolis. While the victims are coached in their roles, the military personnel arriving on the scene have no idea what to expect.
Captain Michael Collins, Deputy Commander of Joint Task Force Civil Support, says the troops are basically doing their normal jobs, but are acting more like first responders in the face of a mock disaster.
The training exercises began on Saturday and will continue through Wednesday.
