Indiana wineries have settled on a dry, sweet white wine as the state's signature vintage.
A handful of states have designated a signature wine. It means most of Indiana's wineries have committed to grow that grape, and the state Department of Agriculture will pay for a small marketing campaign. They've settled on a relatively new Gewurztraminer hybrid dubbed Traminette, designed by a grape breeding program at Cornell to grow in rockier soil and colder weather.
About half the state's 43 wineries have already begun bottling their version of the wine. An Oliver Winery Traminette was named "Traminette of the Year" at this year's Indy International Wine Competition.
The state Office of Tourism is already marketing tie-ins, with Indiana Traminette trails to lure visitors.
