Wishard Memorial Hospital officials say their $754 million project to replace the existing Wishard Hospital will bring some 4,400 construction jobs to Indianapolis.
A ceremonial groundbreaking Wednesday for the new hospital on the IUPUI campus was set to include Indianapolis mayor Greg Ballard, two state lawmakers and other officials.
Marion County voters approved the 37-acre project in November.
Wishard officials say their hospital is the nation's third-largest safety net hospital in terms of outpatient visits.
The new hospital is expected to be complete by late 2013.
