The National Weather Service reports up to 5 inches of rain fell overnight in central Indiana, causing widespread flash flooding.

The area's biggest rainfall was around Kokomo, while about 4.5 inches fell in the western Indianapolis suburb of Brownsburg. Weather Service hydrologist Al Shipe says the worst flooding initially reported was on the south side of Indianapolis and in the western suburb of Avon.

He says flooding is likely along the White River downstream of Indianapolis, on the East Fork of the White River and on the Wabash River from the Terre Haute area.

The weather service issued flash flood warnings for much of the central third of the state.
