Ten men who sailed on the USS Indiana (BB-58) in WWII were on hand Thursday during a christening ceremony for a model of the ship at the Indiana War Memorial.
Brigadier General J. Stewart Goodwin says the featured guests, now in their 80's and 90's, were appreciative of the effort to preserve history.
"To actually have them shake my hand and say, 'Thank you for remembering our story,' is something that is very touching," Goodwin said.
The new 60 pound model, which is over 7 feet long and 14 inches wide, will be the heart of the new WWII Navy exhibit at the memorial in downtown Indianapolis.
The USS Indiana assisted American advances in the Pacific during WWII, receiving nine battle stars for its service. Most of the battleship was sold for scrapping in 1963.
