A City-County Council Committee voted 5-2 Wednesday night to keep Public Safety Director Frank Straub in his position.
The committee heard several hours of testimony on what is usually a formality.
The committee's recommendation goes to the full council. Straub told the committee that overall crime is down five percent and he is committed to working with all public safety employees on reforms proposed for the Metro Police Department.
Fraternal Order of Police leadership has said Straub and Mayor Greg Ballard have been "uncooperative" with them in those reforms.
