Newborn Dies From Rat Poison
IMPD homicide detectives are investigating the death of a 2-day-old girl whose mother ingested rat poison a week before giving birth.
The Marion County Coroner’s office contacted police Sunday when they learned that Bei Bei Shuai, 34, swallowed the poison two days before Christmas.
Patrolman Kendale Adams says the woman told friends in Anderson what she had done and they took her to St. John’s Hospital in Anderson. She was then sent to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where she gave birth on New Year's Eve.
The baby, Angel Shuai, died on Sunday at 1:30 a.m. An autopsy revealed the infant died as a result of the rat poison.
Police say the girl's mother is from the Pacific Islands and moved to the U.S. about 10 years ago. She is undergoing psychiatric treatment at Methodist Hospital.
Kendale says detectives are working to determine if Shuai could be charged with anything from feticide to murder.
"It is definitely shocking to get a case like this," Kendale said.
"Our homicide detectives are certainly trying to work every potential lead to hopefully bring this case to a conclusion."
