As the Indiana Senate prepares to begin debate on a resolution that would place a constitutional ban on gay marriage and civil unions, hundreds of Hoosiers voiced their opposition to it on the steps of the statehouse.Listen:
Opponents of the legislation Monday rallied against the latest effort to amend the state constitution to keep courts from overturning Indiana's law that already makes same-sex marriage illegal.
Critics, including Wade Roth, argue a ban would write discrimination into the constitution. Supporters see it as a way to protect traditional marriage.
The Senate Judiciary Committee is set to consider the measure, which was approved overwhelmingly by the House with a 70 to 26 vote late last month.
If the Senate passes the proposal this year, the amendment would have to pass both the House and Senate again in 2013 or 2014 to be on the ballot in 2014.
