Attorney Defends Mother Who Took Rat Poison While Pregnant

A group of Indiana medical and women's advocacy groups are asking a Marion County judge to dismiss charges against a mother accused of taking rat poison before going into labor in Anderson earlier this year.

34-year-old Bei Bei Shuai's three-day-old baby died in early January.  Shuai reportedly told friends in Anderson she took poison.

Attorney and Doctor David Orentlicher is representing the group.  He says Shuai is mentally ill and needs treatment, not jail.

Interview: Dr. David Orenticher with WIBC's Devon Scott:

Orentlicher says the Marion County Prosecutor's Office made a mistake in charging Shuai.  She is facing murder and attempted feticide charges.   Orentlicher says Shuai was trying to take her own life, not her unborn child.

A hearing on the motion to dismiss is slated for Tuesday, April 5 at 9:00 a.m.
