Victims Remembered with Memorial at State Fairgrounds

A makeshift memorial stands outside the Hoosier Lottery grandstand, as visitors return to the Indiana State Fair after a one-day shutdown.

The fair officially reopened at 10 a.m. Monday, half an hour after the end of a prayer service for the victims of Saturday's stage collapse. The fair had closed for the day Sunday out of respect for the victims. photo: Eric Berman

Many people paused by the array of flowers by the grandstand box office, including five "in loving memory" wreaths for each of the people killed in the collapse. On the ground in front of the memorial are photos of Tammy Vandam, one of three audience members killed, and of Ball State senior Jenny Haskell, critically injured in the accident which killed her high school friend Alina Bigjohny.

But fairgoers say they need to get on with life. And some families note with more and more schools beginning classes, Sunday's cancellation meant today was their best opportunity to get to the fair.
