House Democrats Stage Another Boycott

Indiana House Democrats stage another walk out over "right to work" ahead of Governor Daniels' last State of the State speech.

A day after returning to the House floor to conduct business, Democrats Tuesday afternoon decided to boycott the chamber. The House tried and failed to come in to session at 1:30 p.m. and again at 2:30 p.m., but did not have the needed 67 lawmakers on the floor to do business.

Rep. Ed Delaney (D-Indianapolis) says his fellow Democrats are outraged by Republican's refusal to hold debate or consider amendments at a committee hearing over the "right to work" bill.

"Frankly, they ignored democratic procedure, and my people are not having an easy adjustment," Delaney said.

But House Speaker Brian Bosma ( R-Indianapolis) defends Rep. Douglas Gutwein's decision to refute Democratic amendments to the bill Tuesday morning.

"We've empowered our committee chairmen to conduct their proceedings as they see fit."

Delaney says he's not sure if House Democrats will return for Tuesday night's State of the State speech, which is given to a joint session of the House and Senate.

Bosma says the speech will take place either way.
