Father of 3-Year-Old Killed by His Mother Speaks Out
The father of the three-year-old boy drowned by his mother speaking out about the incident.
Robert Crim tells our newsgathering partners at RTV6 he was trying to gain custody of three-year-old Jacob Smith when his ex-wife Amanda Smith admitted to drowning the boy in her apartment Monday night during her weekly unsupervised visit with Jacob. Crim says Smith became angry after losing custody of her two other children and Crim filed for custody of Jacob.
"She stated in a letter to the courts that she would anything and everything to keep him away from me and the courts just blindly ignored that," Crim says.
Crim says Smith suffers from schizophrenia and told him she hears voices and sometimes acted on them. Smith was arrested Monday night after calling 911 saying her son was dead. When officers arrived, she came out of a closet with an ax before surrendering to police.
Amanda Smith's mother had custody of Jacob at the time. Crim's custody hearing was set for Thursday and says he wants to know why Smith was allowed unsupervised visits with his son.
