Trafalgar Mother Charged With Killing Her Son
A Trafalgar woman accused of drowning her son has been charged with Murder.
A probable cause affidavit states 34-year old Amanda Smith admitted to giving the boy a bath on the night of February 27th then holding his head underwater to "save him from any of the horrible things that might happen to him in the future."
Smith called 911 and told police she had "done something that couldn't be undone." She later told 911 dispatchers that her son's body was in her apartment, but that his soul was not. The 3-year old's lifeless body was found on a bed and he was taken to Johnson County Memorial Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.
The boy had been in the custody of his grandmother and was the subject of a hearing later that week as his father, Robert Crim, had been trying to get custody. Smith was allowed a weekly, overnight, unsupervised visit with her son in her apartment. Crim says Smith had been treated for schizophrenia in the past.
Smith has been in custody since Feb. 27th and was place on suicide watch. A gag order has been placed on any agency involved with the case.
