Family of Student Injured Bus Crash Prepares to File Suit
The family of one of the ten students injured in Monday's bus crash is filing suit.
10-year-old Michael Watkins suffered a broken leg in the crash that killed five-year-old Donasty Smith and the bus driver, 60-year-old Thomas Spencer the second. RTV-6 reports the family, represented by attorney Ken Nunn, says the family is preparing to file suit next week to change the state's seat belt law.
"Whether they're on the bus or in the school, you protect them against the weather. You protect them against shooters and you certainly protect them against a bad wreck like this," Nunn says.
Indiana is one of over 40 states that doesn't require seat belts on school buses.
Indiana State Police said earlier this week that there were no mechanical issues with the bus and Spencer had the proper certifications to drive the bus. Administrators for the Lighthouse Charter School say the accident is still under investigation.
