IFD Captain Rita Burris says firefighters were called to the 700 block of North Holmes Avenue on multiple reports of a house fire. When they arrived, firefighters found two homes on fire. 40-year-old Shawn Burrus told firefighters he was driving in the area and saw 66-year-old Lawrence Summer on the sidewalk with his clothes on fire. Summer told Burrus he had possible fallen asleep while smoking and his clothes were on fire when he woke up. Summer was taken to the Wishard Burn Unit in critical condition with burns to 80% of his body.
Capt. Burris says the fire communicated to the house next door where six people were living inside. All six made it out of the home safely. Crews had both fires under control in about 45 mintues. Damage to both houses is estimated at $70,000.
