Representative Todd Young
Indiana's 9th District congressman is hoping his legislation will inspire development and growth at a former military arms plant in Southern Indiana.
Listen:
Representative Todd Young introduced the Base Redevelopment and Indemnification Correction (BRIC) Act at the River Ridge Commerce Center. The BRIC Act would protect potential purchasers and developers of the former Army installation from environmental lawsuits. The BRIC Act will be added to the National Defense Authorization Act when the Armed Services committee meets May 9th.
Young says only a small portion of the 6,000 acres that once was home to the Indiana Army Ammunition Plant has been redeveloped since the plant's closure because of concern over environmental issues. Young says his his legislation will open the door for that redevelopment to occur. He says the timing would be good because of the Ohio River Bridges Project and could potentially lead to hundreds of thousands of new jobs in a district that needs the growth.
Young doesn't forsee any obstacles when the committee votes on the measures May 9th or when it reaches the full House the following week.
