Supporters to Hold Rally for Expelled Gay Student

5/15/2012

Members of the community are speaking out for an IPS student who got in trouble for taking a stun gun to school.

RTV6 reported Indiana Youth Group and P-FLAG, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, will rally Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Veterans Memorial Park before the school board meeting.

IPS meets at 7 p.m.

Mary Byrne, executive director of IYG, says Darnell Young's punishment was too harsh.  He was expelled until the second semester of 2012-13 school year.  Young says he took a stun gun to school to stop bullies from harassing him because he's gay.

IPS stands behind the decision and says it has a zero tolerance for weapons and policies to address bullying.
