It will be "ham radio" unplugged today and tomorrow in Central Park in Carmel, off Westfield Boulevard between 111th and 116th Streets.
The Hamilton County Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service will has set up systems with digital and satellite capabilities, voice communications, radio and hybrid web systems as well as the old standard, Morse Code. And it will all be "off the grid" meaning no electricity.
"We have the motto--when all else fails, amateur radio works," says spokesman Joe March. "We'll be using generators. We'll be using batteries. We'll be using solar energy."
And it will be a test of the ham operators' ability to respond to emergencies such as tornadoes, hurricanes and earthquakes. "That's why we are volunteers for emergency management," says March. "To be able to respond."
They'll be there for 24 hours straight from 2:00 p.m. Saturday until 2:00 p.m. Sunday.
