6/24/2012

Brandon Veatch

An Army Special Forces soldier from Bloomfield, Indiana is one of the finalists in a special contest for this year's Brickyard 400.

Listen:

This year's race is called the Crown Royal Your Hero's Name Here 400 at the Brickyard and Brandon Veatch is one of five finalists to have his name in the title of the race. Veatch is a Purple Heart recipient who was injured in 2004 whiel trying to intercept a kidnapping in Iraq. "On the way out, we were out, I think we had been out for about an hour and we found out that the whole mission was basically compromised and by that time, it was too late. So, we ended up getting ambushed a couple times."

Veatch says his best friend's father nominated him for the contest. Veatch says he got the idea to nominate him after attending Veatch's Purple Heart ceremony this past February when U.S. Senator Dan Coats presented the medal to Veatch. He says the entire process has been very surreal. If he wins, Veatch will get to wave the green flag and present the trophy to the race winner.

You can vote in the contest at the Crown Royal Facebook page. Voting ends July 6th.
