The son-in law of Edna Sue Pate wants her to turn herself in to Lake County authorities.
Listen:
Thomas Smith says the 73-year-old looted his son's $100,000 college fund before taking off for Louisiana. Smith says he's waiting for the Lake County Prosecutor to request an order to have Pate extradited back to their home in Griffith to face charges. Smith says between 2004 and 2007 Pate withdrew the money in cash. Authorities say she gambled most of the money away at Majestic Star II Casio in Gary.
Authorities say Pate is charged with four counts of theft. Smith says his 20-year-old son Christian is upset and chooses not to talk about the case. Smith says he's no longer married to Pate's daughter. The got wind of the missing money last year after Smith filed a civil suit against Pate seeking the money. Smith says Griffith police later probed the case and issued a warrant for Pate's arrest.
Smith says the warrant remains outstanding as he waits for either Griffith police or the Lake County Sheriff's Department to move on extradition. Smith says he believes she's in Minden, Louisiana where she may have been spotted by authorities.
