One Dead, Five Hurt In Westside Shootings

IMPD says argument among several people led to gunfire near Ben Davis Park

7/3/2012

Police are trying to figure out what sparked a fight among several people that led to gunfire on the Westside.  One woman has died, and at least five others were hurt in the shootings.

IMPD Sergeant Linda Jackson says the shooting started among a large gathering of people near Ben Davis Park on West 21st Street.  The first 911 call came in just after 12:30 a.m. this morning, and Jackson says while police were tending to a 20-year-old woman who had been shot, another car pulled up to officers with another shooting victim inside, a 20-year-old woman.

Another woman, 21, was then discovered with a gunshot wound to the chest near the entrance to the baseball diamond, and paramedics arriving gave another assist to police on the scene.  "(Paramedics) observed a black male running eastbound on 21st," Jackson said.  "Officers from Speedway Police were able to detain him and additional individuals northbound on Girls School Road."

Another 911 call came in which led police to the 6000 block of Westhaven, where they found a 21-year-old woman dead in a car along with a man who had been shot.  Around the same time, a fifth shooting victim, a 25-year-old man, checked himself into the emergency room at I.U. West.

Jackson says several people are being questioned, but no charges have been filed.
