Larretha "Lala" Draughon, 22, died in an early morning shootout on Indianapolis' west side Tuesday.

Draughon was a freshman at Vincennes University in 2011-12, according to a statement from university officials. She was a member of the university's women's basketball team, and she played in 20 games for the Trailblazers last season, averaging 10.8 points per game.

"We are all so saddened to hear of Larretha’s passing; …it’s just a senseless loss of a young life," Vincennes women’s basketball coach and athletic director Harry Meeks said in a news release. "Teammates and coaches become like families and try to be there for each other in both good and bad times. We wish very much that Larretha could have been with us instead of the location of this horrible incident."

Police are still investigating the events that led up to the shooting.
