Brownburg Community School Corporation is among Indiana school districts changing from a traditional calendar to one which is balanced.
Spokeswoman Donna Petraits said the change could benefit students and families.
"Having those extended breaks for fall and winter and spring provides opportunities for remediation and certainly for vacations that they might normally take during the summer," Petraits said.
The change will sync calendars with some area school districts.
"Brownsburg works closely with the Area 31 Career Center at Wayne Township. It's nice when we're on a similar calendar," Patraits said.
Don't mistake the balanced calendar with year-round school.
"People might call it that, although year-round school really is very different. Breaks between grading periods tend to be longer and there tends to be a much shorter summer," Patraits said.
A balanced calendar separates two-week long breaks in the fall, winter and spring with nine-week grading periods. Summer break is eight weeks.
