This is the month for Hoosier history buffs.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says various events are planned for Archaeology Month every September.
"Such a wide variety of different types of sites and age of these sites and types of artifacts that have been found. Its really a fascinating science and journey into our past" says the dnr's Amy Johnson.
Archaeologists have recorded more than 60,000 archeological sites in Indiana since the early 1800s. Some are so important nationally that they are listed in the National Register of Historic Places. This year’s focus is underwater archaeology and shipwrecked sites.
A schedule of events and additional information is at dnr.IN.gov/historic.
