Report: Half of Hoosiers Could Be Obese by 2030

9/19/2012

A new report is projecting an alarming trend when it comes to Indiana's obesity rate.

Listen:

The report from Trust For America's Health says by 2030, Indiana's adult obesity rate could reach 56-percent. Laura McCarthy with IU Health says one of the main problems is the accessiblity of healthier food options. She says if people can have access to those healthy options, then they at least have the choice to provide those foor their families. She says that's specifically tough in low-income and rural areas.

McCarthy says more organizations need to get involved and create programs like IU Health's Garden on the Go or Urban Acres programs to bring more healthy options to families who need them. She says there are ways to curb the obesity rate increase including getting kids more physically active before they become adults.
