The 812 area code in Indiana is projected to run out of phone numbers by 2015. The North American Numbering Plan Commission (NANPA) has brought a petition for area code relief.
Listen:
The Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission has established a schedule which will include two options, which are an area code split or an area code overlay. IURC spokesperson Danielle McGrath says the split option divides the geographical area into separate parts, and the overlay would be another area code overlaying the existing 812 area code.
The next step is for the IURC to hold educational sessions and field hearings to hear public comment. The IURC would then hold an evidentiary hearing and filing dates for the involved parties.
McGrath says population growth, economic progress, and the demand for new services have all contributed to the number shortage in the 812 area code. McGrath says a decision is expected by the end of 2013.
