Deer Hunting Season Opens with Death of Hunter
A tragic start to the hunting season as a 28 year old Rochester man is shot in the head and killed.
Cpl. Ashlee Jackson with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources says Kenneth Moore split up from his hunting party. Jackson says Moore was walking with a 14 year old hunter, for the youth hunting weekend, and was standing in a cornfield when he was shot by another adult.
Jackson says they have only had two gun related killings in the hunting community in the last 5 years. He says anyone who is out hunting needs to be safe, wearing "hunter orange" and to treat every gun as if it was loaded. Jackson adds that hunters need to not just think about shooting a target, but to also think about what is behind that target.
The youth deer hunt was part of a special promotion that lasted over the weekend. Bowhunting season started on Monday, those with firearms will have to wait until November 17th.
