Many elderly Hoosiers are at risk for injury in their own home. It's estimated that one in three adults age 65 and older falls and is the leading cause of injury death for this age group.
A community service blitz will be held on Saturday, October 6 to help make homes safer and more accessible. IU Health rehabilitation professionals will offer home modifications, assessments and community resources in approximately 125 homes, nearly 50 of which will be in Marion County.
Robin Eggers, director of Community Outreach and Engagement for IU Health says some home modifications can be as simple as installing a $30 grab bar in the bathroom.
"A lot of them don't have the proper safety measures in place in bathrooms. They may have throw rugs that are tripping hazards"
The Kickoff event begins at 9 a.m. at Ivy Tech Julia Carson Learning Resource Center.
