The Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention is celebrating a milestone Tuesday.

Listen:

The group is recognizing those who took part in the Blueprint to End Homelessness. That was the city's 10-year strategic plan to end homelessness. CHIP Executive Director Christy Shepard says the strategic plan did a lot of good to address the problem, but unanticipated changes and developments also created new challenges. Shepard says they've seen changes in the economy and donation patterns. Shepard says the group is currently re-evaluating strategies for the homeless and what the group needs to do over the next ten years to tackle the problem. She says new strategies are needed.

Shepard says some 1600 people in Central Indiana have no stable housing on any given night. There are 12 emergency shelters in Indianapolis. She says there are 497 beds for households for children. Shepard says 19% of homeless people in the area are kids under 18. Shepard says they're engaging experts and the community in an effort to address future challenges. The celebration for those who've contributed time, money and expertise to the effort takes place at 5:30 pm at the NCAA Conference Center, Christine Grant Ballroom.
