Woman Dies After Being Struck by Vehicle

10/23/2012

A woman is dead after a crash on the city's east side Tuesday night.

IMPD Officer Kendale Adams says officers were called to the intersection of Washington Street and Post Road on a report of a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle.  They found an 83-year-old woman at the scene who had been struck.  The woman was taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital in critical condition where she later died.

Investigators say 54-year-old Jacqueline Shepherd of Martinsville was traveling westbound on Washington Street and says she didn't see the woman who was either crossing the street or had wandered onto the street.  Adams says IMPD East District officers familiar with the woman believe she suffered from a possible medical condition what would sometimes cause her to wander into the street.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol played a factor in the crash.  Shepherd was offered a blood draw to test for intoxication which is standard procedure in fatal crashes.
