Attorney General Greg Zoeller wants the Indiana Pharmacy Board to suspend the license of a questionable Massachusetts pharmacy. The pharmacy is linked to the nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak.
Zoeller filed an emergency petition today (Friday). He says the New England Compounding Center produced the tainted steroid that has been linked to the meningitis cases. The non-resident pharmacy distributes its products in Indiana and has already suspended operations.
The Indiana Department of Health says the state now has 43 cases and three deaths linked to the nationwide outbreak. Zoeller says the NECC presents an immediate danger to public health and safety.
The Indiana Board of Pharmacy will consider the petition for license suspension at its next meeting November 5th. If the board grants the suspension, NECC would be banned from operating in Indiana for 90 days and Zoeller's office would file a formal licensing complaint.
