They are only temporary jobs, but the Department of Transportation is hiring.

INDOT held a job fair on the east side of Indianapolis, as it tries to fill 30 positions for the next 180 days. Nathan Riggs with INDOT says they are looking for snow plow drivers and general highway maintenance workers for the winter months. "Basically, it's a 180-day position that will last through the winter time in the Indianapolis area. We're also looking for some positions in the Tipton subdistrict, which basically goes from Hamilton County up to Kokomo," said Riggs.

The department typically hires additional workers for the winter, but Riggs says the number they hire depends upon budgets from year to year. He says they saw a fairly steady stream of applicants throughout the job fair, and expect to receive more applications online.

"Specifically, we're looking for people who have at least a Class B (commercial drivers license), people who have a high school diploma, and who can pass a background check and a drug screen," Riggs said.

Barlow Curtis was among those applying for the jobs.  The Indianapolis native says he has worked a collection of part-time jobs ever since he was laid off more than a year ago.   "I used to work for the railroad back in Las Vegas, worked for them 11 years. When they downsized, they downsized 1,800 people," Curtis said.  One reason he applied for this temporary position is because it could turn into a full-time job with INDOT.  "(I like) the freedom of being able to do highway maintenance. The completion of knowing you've fixed something that was broken."

INDOT is still taking applications through next Friday, November 9, and Riggs says you must have a Class A or Class B commercial drivers license. Applications are available online at
