The new director of the Indianapolis Museum of Art says he wants to open the museum up to new audiences.
Dr. Charles Venable spoke at the media opening of a new exhibition that spotlights Islamic art and artifacts. It's called, "Beauty and Belief: Crossing Bridges with the Arts of Islamic Culture." Venable says it's the first IMA exhibition under his watch. Venable says the exhibition helps to build understanding between Western and Islamic cultures.
Venable comes to Indianapolis from the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, Kentucky. The opening marks his fourth week at IMA. He says he wants to increase the exhibition schedule at IMA and draw larger crowds from surrounding cities like Chicago, Dayton and Cincinnati. Venable says he'd also like create ways to bring IMA to communties in Central Indiana.
Venable says even though Indianapolis isn't an "art town," he believes IMA can continue to grow and be a museum leader. "Beauty and Belief" opens to the general public this weekend.
